On this page the oldest part of my weblog is included.....starting on 28 june
2000 !
19 september 2004
| Finally some news after holidays. Although there was
not much holiday, but plenty of traveling |
| played the Dordtse Jazzdagen yesterday with Demeter.
It was a good performance, thanks to being in a really jazzy atmosphere. The
audience was enthousiastic and asking for more at the end! |
| today played with Enterprise in Voorburg. Being the
first concert with our new singer, performing Sinatra songs. |
| in the holiday season I was busy with being part of
the orchestra playing the theatre piece "De Ronselaar". As always the
atmosphere was relaxed and full of the warmth of players. A special aspect
was of course the open air in which we played. This surely contributes to
the quality of being there. |
9 june 2004
8 june 2004
| Played with Demeter at Pijnackerplein. Was happy to
see many familiar faces of Faas fame. Was going well being nice day out in
the sun. |
| Especially for Maurice put a Demeter live track on
the site:
Simple Facts. |
| was stand in with Bigband Blast! at festival in
Enschede. Had the chance to see
Groovetroopers live: what a marvellous band ! |
23 may 2004
| Last few days have been devoted to Demeter. Started with friday playing
at a private party. Today we were playing at cafe ARI. It was pretty crowded
considering the sunny weather and the audience was enthusiastic. Besides
that we did get some critical remarks wich will be useful in improving the
collectiveness of the band. |
| The date for the Pijnackerplein Demeter gig is fixed at 6th june. |
| Thanks to Robertjan i did update the website... ;-) |
| Hope to find some time to arrange some more tunes in the near future.
One candidate is the Herbie Hancock approach of Norwegian Wood. Another one
that will be played soon is Maiden Voyage, also from Hancock. |
| The Hazenoten played at the Vat-oe-fiets event. Was nice sunny day,
cheerful audience, so nice day after all ! |
16 may 2004
| Been busy with traveling for work and also the ZHFO. A week ago we did a
concert in the nice old town of
Middelburg. And yesterday we played at a concours. Unfortunately we did
not promote but the result was good after all. |
| Also yesterday was the private party because of Andreas' and Ria's 40th
birthday. Was nice to meet some musicians over there, including old Crusade
lead guitarist Ricardo. |
| The ARI date is set now for next week. So anyone's invited ! |
| Also Demeter has an option for the DJS in september. Would be nice to
play over there! |
2 may 2004
| unfortunately the Royal Scam
performance on Queen's Night didn't take place, due to circustances beyond
our reach. But i am sure we will soon have another gig ! |
| the Mango! gig was going great,
also thanks to my loyal soundman Adri ! Was anyway nice, also The Relatives
from the UK did a good job. |
| and of course the two Demeter gigs. Too bad Pjotr was little hurt at
30th of April, so Jazzper and me had a tough job. And today at Merz we
missed Jaap, but he was adequately replaced by Evert. |
| updated the Agenda...seems like a packed program the coming weeks |
6 april 2004
| finished the arrangements for the new
Royal Scam tracks: Cousin Dupree, Pretzel Logic and the marvellous horn
arrangement of Reeling In The Years ! |
2 april 2004
| just uploaded some MP3's of the new
Royal Scam tracks |
28 march 2004
| was busy weekend again. Starting with playing with Demeter at "In Den
Boekenkast" at Capelle. Pretty many people showed up including some familiar
faces (Jeroen, Daphne...). Anything went well, and thanks should go as well
to the enthusiastic presenter.. |
| At saturday I was playing with ZHFO at
Topconcours in Arnhem. Was very early: had to leave at 8 in the morning
after long night before. But results were well: we were no. 1 in our
category with more than 90 points ! |
| today i was having rehearsal with Mango! (yes exclamation mark belongs
to the name). And after that having blues session at Dordrecht. |
| The tracks for the next Royal Scam
concert are chosen. I will put these on the site soon. |
22 march 2004
| this weekend was the debut of the Steely Fanz band, featuring the
Victory Horns. Just joking, it was a wonderful experience with a tight band
consisting of nice people. Maybe there will be a follow up of this at the
end of April. Hopefully with some new material.... |
| another nice surprise was the Victory Horns added to Hein performing
some Van Morrison songs. |
18 march 2004
| added "Kid Charlemagne" parts to the
Steely Dan Page, based on the NYC Live Performance !! And also "Fire In
The Belly". |
14 march 2004
| played at the famous Faas pub last night. In fact it was thye first
performance with the new line-up of Demeter. It turned out to be a very nice
gig, along with our collegues of the Blues Bastards (or was it Busters ?).
We were happy to see familiar faces in the audience, including Annebelle,
Merle and Robbertjan of Steely Dan fame and Pepino Rob. |
| started arranging some Van Morrison songs for the 20 march event. |
| Rehearsed for the above mentioned event. And already sure after one time
that it is going to work out fine ! |
10 march 2004
| published the Steely Dan Horn arrangements as PDF files on the
Steely Dan page
|
8 march 2004
| finished the MIDI rendering of the Steely Dan songs...now the DTP part |
6 march 2004
| survived the carnaval again this year....
|
| busy rehearsing for the Faas concert next week
|
| Concert of ZHFO with KHD went well and was nice preparation for the
topconcours in Arnhem later this month. |
20 february 2004
| added MIDI's on the Steely Dan Page |
18 february 2004
| did some more writing for Mis 2004 |
| update the Steely Dan page with
tabs and some lead sheets |
4 february 2004
27 january 2004
15 december 2003
| Did have some musical events lately: Loeiersfestijn with Hazenoten,
Triple concert and Heineken concert with ZHFO, Bokbierfestival with Crusade
and the Zoetermeer gig with Enterprise. |
| Demeter has found a new drummer, Pieter Danz. First rehearsals with him
were going great. |
| Am busy right now editing and uploading some more tracks from the
Tuning The Tune album |
29 october 2003
21 october 2003
| Some sad news about last few months: our friend and drummer of Demeter
Tjarko did die at August 30th. We did pay tribute to him by playing at his
funeral: it was a very emotional event. An "In Memoriam" will be published
on this site soon. |
| been some time since updating this page. Holidays are over so any
refreshment is necessary. Been busy last week writing for the Loeiersfestijn
2003. Some arrangements are to be expected soon. |
| Last sunday had a gig with Demeter at
Boogje 1. It was very nice gig: many Faas people showed up (Guus, Paul
etc.). Some video footage was recorded...to be transmitted on Hutspot TV. |
| Also did some events with Hazenoten
(Kermis, Loosduynenaand some private performances). Were nice sunny days in
the end. |
| Started again with ZHFO. We will be
playing soon at triple concert in Bergschenhoek. |
| Upcoming concert with Bigband Enterprise at November 9th. |
| Same for Crusade on
October 25th. |
2 july 2003
| the musical season is almost over now, enjoying some time off. Last week
had nice weekend with Hazenoten at Kaatsheuvel. We were involved in the
Turfgebloas festival and ended at the 3rd place out of 22 !!! |
| Also the season for the ZHFO ended. We did a concert in Delft and a
barbecue to finish it off. Looking back at an exciting year, starting with a
disappointing concours but ending with a promotion ! |
16 june 2003
| have had some busy days. At first ZHFO was playing at a concours in
Gorinchem. And we did get a lot of points ! Enough anyway to make a
promotion. So we will have to wait for playing at a next concours coming
year. In the meantime doing some gigs with the orchestra. |
| And of course the CD presentation of the newest CD of Demeter. I've
devoted an entire page to it. Due to
the nice weather the number of people visitng the concert should have been
better, but the performance was good anyway. We did play almost all songs of
the CD. Also sales went very well: we sold nearly all copies. We even had to
autograph some of them: makes you feel a real popstar ! |
| In the meantime did some more gigs: playing with Enterprise at Boekmans,
performing with Hazenoten at "Vrienden van Iddus Live". Both activities were
nice after all: we return with Enterprise and hopefully same goes for the
Iddus event.
Nice detail: Iddus means: "Ik Denk Da'k er Uit Schei" |
25 may 2003
| Finished the recording sessions with Demeter and also completed the
mastering. On the forthcoming demo-CD the tracklist will be:
- Samba
Cantina (Paul Desmond)
- Sleep Dirt (Frank Zappa)
- Tuning The Tune (Pjotr Jurtschenko)
- Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (Josef Zawinul)
- Namaqualand (Erixc van der Westen)
- Pep's (Mike Mainieri)
- Simple Facts (Pjotr Jurtschenko) .... Live track
Of course thanks to the wizz-kids Adri and Andreas. I will be posting soon
more information about the CD. |
10 may 2003
| unfortunately the gig with Crusade at Barbiertje was cancelled because
of serious illness of our drummer. All the best to Rene ! But we will have
another chance at end of the year |
| read a
review
of the new Vincents CD, mentioning the Victory Horns !
"springt een aantal tracks er in positieve zin uit: de openingstrack Dear
Planet, Pennywise With Angels, de titeltrack, Take A Ride en
Barbacane
waarin een belangrijke rol is weggelegd voor de driekoppige blazerssectie
Victory Horns" |
| Did play at the "Night Of the Proms" concert with Concordia |
30 april 2003
| just did concert today as stand in for
Zondagamateurs Bigband. Nice surprise was the performance of tenor
soloist Jeroen Brokkelkamp. |
| Played with Crusade at
Dolhuys Dordt. Gig was OK, too bad that not that many visitors showed. |
| Did have concert with ZHFO at the big
hall of De Doelen Rotterdam. Was nice to be back there. Last time was some
years ago. |
| Busy working with Demeter to prepare for recording at May 11th. We
dfinally did fix the track list. It will comprise 6 tricks, among which the
PPJ original "Tuning The Tune". |
16 april 2003
| did gig with Crusade at a private party. What struck me was the
difference in perception between band and audience. While we thought we
played moderately the crowd was enthusiastic. |
| Did two concerts with Fanfare Concordia at the Lenteconcert. Was going
well, accompanied by a ballet and the self programmed lightshow ! |
| Rehearsed with Demeter to prepare for the recordings on may 11th. Did
some nice arrangements of Mike Manieri's Pep's and the gospel tinged Mercy,
Mercy. Afterwards made some wild plans about touring in Japan and artistic
sleeves. |
3 april 2003
| Made some changes to the Agenda |
| Had (short) concert with the ZHFO. We
did some moody pieces, amongst which my solo on "Crimson Tide". It was
crowded this evening, with also two other concert bands performing. |
| Other performances were with Crusade, at "De Twijfelaar"and "De
Boerderij". Both were going pretty well... |
| Arranged Mike Mainieri's "Pep's" for Demeter |
20 march 2003
| Have had the performance with
Steef "The Tunes" Vooren. Was reasonably well considering the two
rehearsals we had. Maybe there will be a follow up to this performance later
this year. Possibly at the pre-Dunya festival. |
| made quite some additions at the agenda |
27 february 2003
2 february 2003
| Just played with Bigband
Enterprise
at Bergschenhoek. Was going well, and the number of visitors was alright
taking into account that this was second time event was held. |
26 january 2003
| did gig with Demeter yesterday at Cafe Faas. This yearly event was great
again, celebrating the return of our drummer Tjarko and featuring Marvin on
vocals. Even owner Ruud (strange man) was happy with the number of people
showing up and music as well ! This is very remarkable and a once in a
lifetime compliment ! I was happy to see many of musical friends (thanks
Ruud, Kees, Willem, Peter, Robert, Gerben, Dirk.....). |
| will be working with Demeter for our next gig at Cafe Alpherat,
featuring Steef Vooren on vocals. He will be performing Frank Sinatra
material !! |
10 january 2003
2 january 2003
| Some weeks ago the Enterprise Bigband had a gig at Zoetermeer. Due to
this performance we have been asked to do some more performances in The
Hague and Leidschendam. |
| Have been playing on the Crazy Crusade Cristmas party. Was big success:
more than 150 visitors !! And that for the first time ..... |
| Been busy working on some songs for "Karnavalsmis 2003". Among them will
be "Vriendschap"and "MacArthur Park". Am thinking on some new songs; |
| Rehearsed with Demeter for the Faas gig in January. Did a new tune
"Liberated Brother" from Weldon Irvine, as performed by Horace Silver. This
particular track features Michael and Randy Brecker.... |
5 december 2002
| Last Saturday we played at the Loeiersfestijn. The price for best music
was won by Mathieu's song "Spektakel" in my arrangement !! Happy
about that... |
| been rehearsing with ZHFO: some gigs are coming up in the future, starting
probably at March 2003; |
| preparing for Bigband Enterprise performance at Zoetermeer coming sunday. |
| Hazenoten will play at Mis 2003. Busy thinking for songs to do at that
occasion. For last time take a look at Mis 2001 |
24 november 2002
| Yesterday had gig at private party in Rotterdam. Special guests were
Jacques on accordion and bass clarinet and Anita on vocals. Amazing it was
performing the songs with such short preparation. |
| Christmas gig with Crusade is fixed now at december 21. |
| Same goes for Demeter playing at Faas coming year. |
17 november 2002
| Due to repeated request this page is updated again: good to know it is
actually being read ! |
| Little bit quiet on the writing front: I hope to find more time for it
during the cold winter evenings that are coming... |
| not quiet on the gig front. Yesterday played with Rhythm Junction Bigband
on a private party and tried to team up with Vincents at Cafe Faas.
Unfortunately I forgot to take my mouthpiece with me from the gig before so
no luck playing along. Was anyway a nice presentation of the new CD
"The Very Brown Mercedes Of My Soul". |
| Today played with ZHFO on a concours. Was nice first time experience for
me. |
| New Demeter gig taking place next week.... busy rehearsing with new female
singer ! |
| Also worth mentioning was Crusade gig at Bokbier Festival at The Bears Of
Berlage. Very large crowd was showing up: mainly for the beer but also for
our band ! |
5 october 2002
| Tonight I had a gig with Hazenoten at Loosduinen. And of six bands we took
the number ONE place !!! Was nice day anyway: bit rainy but very good mood.
From the public as well as ourselves. |
| Demeter had gig at wedding in Slot Zeist. It was a very distinguished
evening, nice dressed guests and some tasteful music. Of course we played
our rendition of Alright from Jamiroquai. Another highlight was the sensual
approach to Body and Soul. |
| will be writing an arrangement for the Loeiersfestijn at the 30th of
November. |
15 september 2002
| Have finished Mo
Better Blues for Demeter. I think this is a perfect track to finish a
performance with...kinda "happy ever after" gospel tinged blues. |
| Put a demo version of Barbacane
from Vincents on the site, featuring Victory Horns ! |
12 september 2002
| Have been playing at Cafe Vos again. We will be there every 2nd sunday of
each month. This time was special because of two performances of writer/musician
Henk
Weltevreden and of course the new painting of Tjarko of Miles Davis was
presented. Also some jazz musician paintings were shown (Jaco Pastorius,
John Coltrane, Tony Williams..); |
| Started writing again for Demeter: first is Mo Better Blues and a special
rendition of the Beatles' classic "All My Loving"; |
| Fellow Demeter member Erik Nout opened his own
webpage It consists of poems, little stories and nice columns. |
02 september 2002
| The performances of "Marat/De Sade" are finished now. Just
returned from the final party. I think we did a good job with the orchestra.
After all it was a nice experience. Finally we played tonite our renditions
of "Wandelclub" and "Unit Seven". Maybe there will be a
follow-up with some musicians. But surely it will be listed on this page. |
| Yesterday had first performance of Demeter with our guest drummer Mels. It
was a memorable gig at the Golfclub Vlaardingen. Surprising was the people
singing and dancing in the end, and the remarkable versions of some old
standards like Summertime. The latter song was transformed in a Seventies
Disco track... surely interesting it was. |
| Special welcome to the many visitors abroad The Netherlands... soonthey
will be surpassing the numbers of inland visitors for this page ! |
| Will be working next days on the Demeter page to get the appropiate links
on it ! |
18 august 2002
| The first performances of the Kersouwe pice are finished now: we were very
lucky with the weather. Been playing in the warm sun, enjoying good theatre
play and of course the effective music. I noticed some players are getting
better each show: looking forward for the last show already !
Also been writing for the orchestra: Unit
Seven, Namaqualand,
Wandelclub
and Buona
Sera. We rehearsed some of them already, secretly when nobody was
listening ! |
11 august 2002
| Been busy last week with rehearsals for the Kersouwe
play of this year: Marat/De Sade. Finished an alternative arrangement of the
French Hymn "Marseillaise"
in a somewhat strange and stubborn way, reflexting the mood of the play.
It's based partly on the chord changes of the intro of "Invisible
Touch" by the Phil Collins Bigband. Next week some more writing will be
done... what is is a secret for now ! |
29 july 2002
| Finished the arrangement of "Unit
7" by Sam Jones, as played by Cannonball for Demeter.
Tomorrow rehearsing it ! |
18 july 2002
| I added some pics of the "Leidse Straat Festival". |
| The Demeter rehearsals have started again, with Mels Bol replacing Tjarko
temporarily. We also had an audition for the gig at private party at
September 20th. Think we made good impression. |
| From September Demeter will play the Cafe Vos again. For the first concert
we picked the 8th of September,a nd we will be there every 2ndsunday of the
month. The new season will start with a special concert, featuring special
guests and (probably) paintings of Tjarko, specially made for this occasion. |
7 july 2002
| We were today at the"Leidse Straat Festival". Among the 32
groups we were chosen to be one of the 6 in the Finale. Not a bad resut,
considering we just did one rehearsal for it ! Was a nice day ever after:
playing in the sun, very close to the audience, making jokes and having a
good time. Was also special because it was something entirely different from
what we do normally. |
| Next week we start rehearsing with Demeter again with guest drummer Mels
to prepare for the two gigs in August and September. |
30 june 2002
| been a while since updating this page. Was quite busy last few weeks: more
in business (was in Germany and Italy), then in music. Had still quite some
gigs: at 14th standin with Bigband Blast, at 15th with ZHFO, and last few
days with Crusade and Bigband Enterprise.
Especially performance with Crusade at DJS was wonderful: really
super-audience knowing all lyrics and musical lines, yelling and shouting !
That really gives confidence for the future ! Dordt Rulez.... |
| today had rehearsal with Demeter for the "Leidse Straat Festival" next week.
We will be playing a variety of styles, ranging from Dutch Blues of Andre
Hazes to Old Jazz from the New Orleans tradition. This all mixed with
ballads and latin. Am sure it will be very enjoyable ! |
| last few performances with Hazenoten were OK: especially the day in the
sun at Bemmel ! |
| started rehearsing for the Kersouwe performance
this year: Marat/De Sade. |
8 june 2002
| after having been in Germany for a conference I managed to attend the Faas Musical
Night right afterwards. It was a nice evening with happy people, good music
and a friendly atmosphere. Some pictures have been taken this evening, and
they are on the Faas Musical Page.
Also some live video footage of Erwin
Hoorweg can be found.
Unfortunately our female singers Peggy and Willie couldn't be there....
let's hope they will attend next year ! |
3 june 2002
| added a preview of the demo recordings of last gig at Faas. It's "Simple
Facts", a minor blues by Pjotr. |
| am already preparing for the "Faas Bonte Muziek Avond". It is a
yearly musical event in my favorite pub and will feature this year: Anton
Drukker (bass), Andries Schooneveld (drums), Erwin Hoorweg (piano), Steef
Voorn and Willie Bakker (voice), of course the Demeter Horns, saxophone
quartet Reed My Lips, and other guests. |
| Had rehearsal with Zuid Holland Fanfare Orkest: am pretty confident about
it with one rehearsal to go. |
| Did two gigs with Hazenoten: nice playing in the sun ! |
28 may 2002
| Very sorry to haven't updated this page for such a long time. Will do my
best to refresh it more often. |
| Have been working on a Bigband and Fanfare adaptation of Chick Corea's
"Central Park". Took quite some time: have mixed several
arrangements of the tune. |
| have had the Barbiertje gig with Crusade. Was nice being there again. |
| the month june will be fully packed with a lot of gigs with various bands |
| received a nice email from Erwin Hoorweg of Houdini's. He can be found on http://www.gloep.nl |
| Next week the musical event of the years is coming up: Faas Musical Night,
featuring Anton Drukker, Erwin Hoorweg and lots more ! |
| Started rehearsing for the Kersouwe production "Marat/De Sade".
More on this very soon. |
1 may 2002
| Had our gig at Cafe Faas. A lot of people showed up: from Amsterdam, Utrecht and even Japan ! |
| A lot of new performances with Crusade are coming up. Added some dates to the agenda ! |
18 april 2002
| Lots of things happened lately: amongst them the last Vos concert of
Demeter until September. Writing new material for Hazenoten (Motown classic
Reach Out), new Crusade performances coming up. And rehearsing with ZHFO and
Bigband Enterprise for the concert at April 25th. For a complete list of
gigs look at the agenda. |
| The Demeter concert at Cafe Faas is now fixed at April 27nd. We might be
enhanced with a mystery guest, but this will be revealed later at this
website. So stay tuned for details and hints. |
| At the latest Demeter concert in Vos the band's founding father Lourens
was present: nice surprise to see him again ! |
| Busy working with Demeter at new material for the upcoming gigs. |
31 march 2002
| Visited another concert: Bik Bent Braam. Very good jazz and interesting
compositions. Especially the trick Angelo Verploegen did with screaming in
the trumpet was nice. Also a surprising performance of a mystery trumpet
player. |
| Working with Demeter on some new vocal tracks: we did "The Man I
Love" from Gershwin in the Michiel Borstlap/Trijntje Oosterhuis
version. Also we did "Feel Like A Natural Woman" from Carole
King/Gerry Goffin, well known from Aretha Franklin. Peggy puts whole her
heart and soul into it: it seems she sings her heart out ! |
| Some new gig in our own Cafe Faas upcoming: might be at the end of April.
More details to come ! |
| had last rehearsal of Crusade before the gig at Adri's party: am confident
about it ! For the horn players the Blood Sweat & Tears version of
"God Bless The Child" is surely gonna be the highlight ! |
| gonna be helping the ZHFO for the
concert of june 16th. Had first rehearsal this afternoon. |
| was very nice to see the former Demeter pianist and founder Lourens
playing again. He was helped by Jaap and Tjarko of Demeter. |
17 march 2002
| Just have been to a Houdini's concert. Makes you proud again to be Dutch
!! Excellent band and good compositions. |
| Yesterday had the gig in the "Boekenkast" (it means book
drawer). It was for the third time in a row, and it gets better every year !
Although it was a bit short: the mood was right and we were all very happy
about it ! Plans have been made for the gigs in the next time to attach a
musical/lyrical theme to it: more about it later on this site ! |
11 march 2002
| Some time passed since last update of this page. Was busy working for my
job and in the meantime did some musical activities. Have been playing the
last concert with the Willem Friede Project in Paradox, Tilburg. |
| Also had rehearsal with Bluesband Crusade. After some months our female
singer Marianne Noble is back, as never before. So preparing for our next
gig at April 6th for Adri's 50th anniversary ! |
| Today I was surprise guest with "Jaap and the Hightones",
consisting of Jaap, Pjotr and Erik of Demeter. Was a nice intimate
performance at the wellknown Cafe Vos. Was quite an unusual setting for me,
without drums and piano. But nice experience after all. |
| The date for the next Enterprise gig is fixed: Saturday April 27th at the
Doelencafe Rotterdam. |
25 february 2002
| The Vos gig was great. Very good audience with several real die-hard
Demeter fans like Paul, Mike, Gitta, and many others. The new vocal tracks
were really amazing: Peggy was really singing the blues ! Also the
groove-oriented Brasilian Stars and Little Sunflower did work out well. |
| The Willem Friede project will have it's final at March 7th in Paradox,
Tilburg. Finally Marco and me will play together ! |
| We are on the "Jazz kalender Zuid Holland" with the Boekenkast
gig. Listed inbetween Frans Elsen and Ferdinand Povel... it really is an
honour ! |
| The Crusade gig at April 6th is fixed now. |
19 february 2002
| Having had my first rehearsal with Demeter again. Worked on some
instrumental pieces. Worth mentioning is a groove-funk oriented version of
"Little Sunflower" of Freddie Hubbard. We also did some Pjotr
originals: one of the ingredients giving the band it's distinctive sound. Am
happy my own original composition Syrenity will be played instrumental. Not
mentioning Flootie and the new vocal songs.
Concluding there are enough reasons to go to Demeter next Sunday in Cafe Vos.
For the people who can't make it there will be a second chance at March 15th
at "In Den Boekenkast" in Capelle a/d Yssel. |
16 february 2002
| The Karneval for this year is over ! And a good one it was: 5 days of
playing and partying ! This gives me time to spend some time on my other
bands. And of course for updating this website at a regular basis ! |
3 february 2002
| Finished the New Cool Collective workshop with Willem Friede doing a gig
at the Barbiertje in Hellevoetsluis. Had to play lead trumpet today... went
reasonably well ! |
| Rehearsed with Bluesband Crusade. Did a new song: Tin Pan Alley from
Stevie Ray Vaughan. Was very good for the first time. Further worked on the
funk/latin arrangement of "Everybody's Everything" from Santana.
Next time we will do the Blood Swaet and Tears arrangement of "When I
Die" from Laura Nyro. |
| Another vocal rehearsal with Demeter: the Abbey Lincoln tracks and also
"500 Miles High" from Chick Corea. The latter song is famous for
the Flora Purim vocals. |
26 january 2002
| Just played the Doelencafe with a New Cool Collective program. Had to
direct it, but anything went well. Large audience showed up. Next show will
be in a week in Hellevoetsluis. |
| The date for the "In Den Boekenkast" gig has been set at 15th
March. |
| Been busy rehearsing with Demeter for the upcoming gigs: the vocal part
will be extended. Nice new songs from Abbey Lincoln. |
| Also rehearsing with Crusade, turning the Santana classic "Everybody's
Everything" into a funk flavoured latin piece. Sweet surprise is the
latin guitar solo at the end ! |
13 january 2002
| Lots of playing the last few days: about 1700 attendants at De
Hofzittingen and also performing as guest soloist at an intimate concert. It
was the last time playing at Hofzittingen so a lot of attention was paid to
us giving the last performance ! |
| Would nearly forget to mention the Demeter performance at Vos was OK !
Next time in Vos will be February 24th. |
| Received some pix from a Vos gig: will be published soon on the site ! |
| Because most of the playing is over I will have some time for writing
again ! |
| The performance at The Doelencafe with the New Cool Collective Project
will be at January 25th. |
5 january 2002
| Probably the final arrangement for "Hofzittingen 2002": Midnight
Special. It turns out to be a very old song, already played by
Leadbetter, later on by Johnny Rivers and the rockers of Creedence
Clearwater Revival. In Holland it is probably best known by the version of
80's band Drukwerk:"Schijn een lichtje op mij" (Shine a light on
me). |
| long rehearsal day with Bluesband Crusade, hard working to turn Santana's
"Everybody's Everything" into a blues-flavored rock-funk song. |

12 december 2001
| Just finished the (vocal) arrangement of "Greased
Lightning" for "Hofzittingen
2002". |
9 december 2001
| Am in the middle of arranging and rehearsing for "Hofzittingen
2002". Last week I finished the vocal arrangement for "Ease
On Down The Road"... the well known piece from The Wiz. When
looking at info on these track I stumbled into a site naming all the
musicians playing at the Original Soundtrack: it's really unbelievable and
amazing when you see this star studded cast. Present are a large part of the
Count Basie, Oliver Nelson and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestras. Besides that
names like Mike and Randy Brecker, Steve Gadd, some Steely Dan alumni etc...
At the moment I am busy writing on some selections from Grease and more
vocal pieces to come... |
3 december 2001
| Finished my first piece for "Hofzittingen 2002": Get
Me To The Church On Time, a well know tune from "My Fair
Lady". Am working now on some more tunes.... |
26 november 2001
| The NightTown gig was going very very well... think it was the first time
a really tight band was performing. Some parts were moving, even for me...
especially the vocal feature "Hi-Fly" and the Zappa-song
"Sleep Dirt". We were kind of a desert of calmth and relax in
between a pop-fury. According to the public they appreciated it too ! |
25 november 2001
| Just returned from gig with Demeter at a private party. Was a good
rehearsal for NightTown tomorrow. Also learned a lot about sound-engineering
!! |
23 november 2001
| Busy time with Demeter... tomorrow playing at Kralingen and Sunday at
Nighttown. |
| just finished "Banditen
Galopp", the "Sjouwdans" for this year. It's a lively
dance by Johann Strauss. |
11 november 2001
| The Vos gig was OK, especially by all the people who were invited and
showed up... what a large Faas population ! |
10 november 2001
| Two more gigs for Demeter are coming up: at the 24th at a private party
and at th 25th at Popular (Nighttown Cafe) in Rotterdam. The latter is a
kinda audition for music agencies. |
| Fixed the setlist for Cafe Vos tomorrow.... |
4 november 2001
| The Vos gig in November will be
on the 11th. Sunday afternoon from 2 o'clock till 6. Be sure not to miss
it... we will be performing some new songs, that will be rehearsed tomorrow.
You'll hear more about it soon ! |
28 october 2001
| The Demeter gigs at Cafe Faas and Cafe Vos both went very well !!
Especially at Faas there was a large audience... thanx to anyone who showed
up there !! |
| The Vos gig will have a follow up in November.. the exact date is not yet
fixed..Iif news is available it will be put here. |
| The recordings, video-shoot and photographs with Crusade at Musicon in The
Hague went fine. Any footage will be published here if available; |
| The performance with the RJP of the Eric van der Westen project in Popular
went fine. |
| Arranged "Vriendschap"
for Hazenoten; |
| Arranged "I
Wish" and "Everybody's
Everything" for Crusade. |
| Added some info on Adri to the Demeter page. |
12 october 2001
| finally did the mailing for the Demeter gig at 20th of October in Cafe
Faas. The Flyer can be seen at the agenda. |
| changed the Demeter page and added
information about pianist Elbert Raadsen. |
5 october 2001
| new gig for Demeter coming up: at 14th of October at Cafe Vos in
Rotterdam. We play from 3 till 5 pm. |
| rehearsed some new songs for the Vos-gig, all of them features for the
horns section: Pjotr plays "Oak Leaf", Jasper plays "Harlem
Nocturne" and I play "Dear Old Stockholm". Some vocal
features are coming up. |
| because the old Demeterweb domain doesn't exist anymore, I applied for a
new redirection: http://listen.to/demeter |
29 august 2001
| had some gigs lately: with Demeter at a private party in Zoetermeer, with
Hazenoten at Ahoy and Poeldijk and with bigband Enterprise at Nieuw
Beijerland |
| arranged the old disco classic "Enough
Is Enough" for Hazenoten. This 1979 duet by Donna Summer and Barbra
Streisand was succesfully covered by K.D. Lang/Andy Bell and Kym Mazelle/Jocelyn
Brown. |
| started attending a workshop by Willem Friede, playing his arrangements
for Benjamin Herman's New Cool Collective Big Band. Among them the
marvellous composition "NCC1701" and some groove oriented pieces. |
29 august 2001
| performed last sunday with Demeter at a private party. This time we were a
9 piece band, enhanced with sound-engineer Adri. The start was slowly but
gradually the spirit came over the band. The new South-African songs went
remarkably well. So, on to the next performance in two weeks. |
| Arranged the "Goede Doel" song "Nooduitgang"
for Hazenoten. |
23 august 2001
| The holidays period is over: all the bands are starting again. So the
agenda has been reworked. And new songs are arising: Namaqualand,
Le Lis,
Morning.
And finally an arrangement of Goodbye
Pork Pie Hat which I'm quite proud of !! Some songs will be performed at
the next Demeter performance at The Golfclub in Vlaardingen. |
| Transscribed the classic Blood, Sweat and Tears arrangement of God
Bless The Child. |
| In the meantime I did a Sonny Rollins workshop at the pretty village of
Villers in La Douce France. |
2 july 2001
| Just finished an arrangement of "Time
After Time". It was written by Cyndi Lauper, but is famous among
jazzsters because of the adaption of Miles Davis. My arrangement is
somewhere inbetween... |
1 july 2001
| Performed friday with Bluesband Crusade at The Barbiertje. It was the
first performance with the new singer Ron. He did a good job. Nice detail
was the dancing of the crowd on the jazz-tune "Stolen Moments":
never seen that before !! |
| Yesterday did a replacement job with the intermediate band of the RJP. We
played a Eddie Harris programme. Very nice tunes (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Rice
Pudding). It was directed by Erwin Hoorweg, of Houdini's fame. |
| Last weekend I had a fully packed programme with The Hazenoten, playing at
a festival. It seemed a lot like vacation, being in a tent on a lawn. |
| Demeter rehearsed another Eric van der Westen song: Namaqualand. It's
special characteristic is the blending of a 6/8 and a 4/4 rhythm. |
21 june 2001
| The Faas session went great. Amongst the guests were Jasper, Pjotr, Tjarko,
Jaap and Peggy from Demeter, Jan van Wessel, Frank van de Velden, Sanne Nout,
Marcel Reijs and Erwin Hoorweg from the Houdini's. So a star studded
cast...A diversity of songs were played. Among them Cantaloupe Island, Son
of a Preacherman, Fragile and so on. The rhythm section was enhanced with
Elbert Waal on piano. The evening was classy presented by Steef Voorn. |
| Demeter rehearsed some new songs: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Inside
Straight. Also Naala from Eric van der Westen was introduced. |
| The Hazenoten-performance at the "Vlooienmarkt" was good. A pity
it rained nearly all day... |
12 june 2001
| The poster for the Faas session is attached to the Agenda.
Probably the Demeters will perform: "Saint James Infirmary",
"All Blues" and "Inside Straight". The last song is new
and was rehearsed yesterday: it's got a funky beat, but is still bluesy. |
| The performance with the Enterprise Bigband was fine: especially guest
Arie Kuit on lead alto was in good shape !! |
6 june 2001
| The Faas session will be held at 15th june in the afternoon. Amongst
others (supercrooner Steef Voorn) Demeter will perform at this evening. |
4 june 2001
| Been busy all day with some latin arrangements: "La Vida Es Un
Carneval" and "Bamboleo", both by Celia Cruz. |
2 june 2001
| Rehearsed with Hazenoten yesterday and tried "Yeh-Yeh". It
worked remarkably well. Might be a good song for the forthcoming
performances. |
| Rehearsed all day with Crusade to prepare for the performance at
Hellevoetsluis. We added some new songs to the list, including "Mustang
Sally", "Superstition", "Pride And Joy" and
"The Sky Is Crying". |
27 may 2001
| Just finished the arrangement of "Mustang Sally" for bluesband
Crusade. Along with Superstition and "Pride And Joy" it will be a
new track at the songlist. |
27 may 2001
| Performed with "The Big Jam" last wednesday. I must admit that the
rehearsal
were better than the performance: this band needs training, but has potential. |
| Yesterday Demeter bought some electronic equipment to be ready for performances in the
future. We started with the EMX300 Powered Mixer from Yamaha. |
| I just finished an arrangement of "Goodbye
Pork Pie Hat": from Mingus. It was written for Demeter as a vocal arrangement. |
20 may 2001
| Lots of things happened the last weeks: wednesday the RJP performed with Corrie van
Binsbergen at Zaal 100 in Amsterdam. We had some excellent guests: Joost Buis (trombone),
Gilly (tenorsax) and Esmée Olthuis (alto sax). Despite we didn't play the tunes for more
than four weeks, it went reasonably well. |
| Today I performed with Crusade at Dordrecht. Again we had some technical troubles, but
the band turned it into a very acceptable performance: the mood was right anyway. |
| Yesterday it was the birth of "The Big Jam". This band is put for one
occasion. We rehearsed all day long. In total 7 tracks were played. Among them some
adaptations of the New Cool Collective tunes (Five High, Big Mondays, Flootie, Yeh Yeh).
The band is a 21 piece orchestra consisting of rhythm section (drums bass, keyboard, twin
guitar), 5 saxophones, 3 trumpets and trombone. The ensemble is augmented with a 6 piece
percussion group. As mentioned before the Victory Horns will be featured. I put some MIDI's on the web. |
11 may 2001
| Today I recorded with the Victory Horns for the forthcoming Vincents CD. Among it were
"Barbicane" and the trumpet/flugelhorn feature "Brillianteen". We
travelled to the small village of Vuren to record at a pittoresque location. Though we
needed some takes everything was put on tape in time. |
| Demeter did a good job performing at the exhibition. Although the band got more
attention than the paintings the organiser was very pleased with us. She expressed her
thanks very clearly. There was a lot of audience, thanks especially the people from our
home at the Faas pub. Some people present who were at all our performances the last weeks
appreciated the relaxed mood at this occasion. |
| A day after the gig at The Hague we rehearsed last monday. We put some attention to some
new songs: Flootie (Benjamin Herman) and "So What" from St. Germain (French
producer). The last tune showed a remarkable resemblance to Monk's "Straight No
Chaser", but is somewhat funked up. And for the first time we worked on translating
Peggy's New York inspired poems into a musical setting. To be continued !! |
| New short term project: with a percussion enhanced group we're gonna play at a private
party. The Victory Horns will be present, as well as the rhythm section of the Tuesday
Bigband. The Horns will be featured as a jazz-ensemble. Probably "Flootie" is
gonna be played, as well as "Oye Come Va". |
5 may 2001
| Yesterday I rehearsed with Vincents to prepare for the recording next week. We played
the new tune Barbacane. |
| Tomorrow Demeter plays at the opening of the exhibition of Tjarko at Galerie Lijn 3 in
The Hague. We'll start about 4 o'clock. |
2 may 2001
| I added some pictures of the Demeter performance at "De
Boekenkast" |
30 april 2001
| On this Dutch national celebration day I performed with Bluesband Crusade on a festival.
Despite some technical difficulties everything went fine. |
| Yesterday I played with Demeter at the "Barbiertje" in Hellevoetsluis. Because
of the beautiful weather (first sunny day in Holland) the public interest was a bit
disappointing. The performance was good: Peggy sang very moving on "You Go To My
Head" (some people in the audience nearly forgot to breathe) and Pjotr played a
splendid part on "Stars In A Clear Brasilian sky". Of course the other members
of the band played well. I think I'll put some soundsamples on this website. |
26 april 2001
| Another performance with Corrie in the pipeline: 16 may in "Zaal 100" in
Amsterdam. We will be finishing a festival. |
| Bigband Enterprise will be performing at the 9yh of june at a jazzfestival in
Zoetermeer. |
| I attached the setlist for the Demeter gig at the
"Barbiertje" coming sunday afternoon. |
22 april 2001
| Just returned from the RJP concert with Corrie (van Binsbergen). All went great despite
the fact we didn't rehearse for more than a week. Unfortunately the number of audience was
not that big, but all you out there don't know what you have missed !! |
| Performed yesterday with Demeter at a gig in Capelle. Worth mentioning was the
astonishing performance of "You Go To My Head" by Peggy, Jaap, Pjotr and Tjarko.
It will certainly be on the setlist for Hellevoetsluis !! |
| The Faas jamsession on the 5th of may will be postponed. As more news is available it
will be on this website. |
19 april 2001
| Rehearsed for the next gig in Capelle. We added some popsongs: Proud Mary, Don't Stop
and Midnight Hour. Of course also some jazz tracks were added: Mercy Mercy and Stalin
Malone (Elvis Costello). Special guest this evening will be Jacques Verhage featuring on
bassclarinet, piano and accordeon. |
| Worked on some new songs for the Vincents CD-recording. Worth mentioning are the new
songs "Barbicane" and "Hypnotised". |
| Lightened up the Demeter page with some pictures: and |
14 april 2001
| Performed at "De Boekenkast" yesterday. Was great ! Particularly the 2nd set
was good. This was also our first gig with Peggy and Erik. They both did a good job.
Surprising was the singing of Peggy on Emalobolo and the percussion solo of Erik on
"Little Sunflower" |
8 april 2001
| Just returned form the RJP gig with Corrie: it went great !! The repeat will be 22nd of
april at the DJS in Dordrecht. Besides the orchestra we had some excellent guest soloists:
Anton Goudsmit and Ferdi Schukking. Detail:
the website of Ferdi is called Duodenum, this is also known as the Lumpy Gravy theme from
Frank Zappa, can't be a coincidence !! |
| Added the Faas Jam at the agenda. |
5 april 2001
| The gig for Demeter is fixed: at 21st of April at Capelle. This will be a private
performance. |
| I'm busy working on an adaptation of the Henk Meutgeert arrangement of "Central
Park" by Chick Corea. |
25 march 2001
| One new possible gig for Demeter: at 21st of april in Capelle. |
| Last rehearsal we worked on Skylark: Pjotr has written a beautiful arrangement for it.
It will be performed at the "De Boekenkast" gig. |
| I created a new email-alias: demeter@xs4all.nl. |
18 march 2001
| Demeter is busy rehearsing for the concerts in April. This will be the first time
performing with Peggy and Eric. Last rehearsal we worked on the "Walk On By"
arrangement, and added some latin influences on it (waheo patterns). Also "Love For
Sale" has changed a bit: the bridge now contains a very strange Monk-like chord
change. To hear this, you better listen to it at the concert !! |
| I added an agenda, to have an overview of the upcoming events. |
3 march 2001
| I survived the "Carnaval" this year. Everything went fine and the Mis 2001 was OK. Especially worth mentioning are the soloists from
the youth orchestra "De Kuussebloazers": you did a marvellous job. From now I
can dedicate more time working with the other bands. April will be a very busy month with
lots of performances. |
| A new band is emerging: salsa band Sason (Sazon means spicy). I will be writing and
playing in this band. Soon there will be more news/soundclips. |
4 february 2001
| On Various I put an MP3 of "Love For Sale". I wrote the arrangement
for The Tuesday Big Band. It's taken from a demo CD. |
| Today I wrote an arrangement of "Somewhere"
from West Side Story for Mis 2001. |
| The line-up of Demeter is extended with Peggy
and Erik. |
28 january 2001
| We rehearsed two pieces for Mis 2001: Le Lac de Connemara and
Les Vieux Amants. It went very well for the first time. |
21 january 2001
| I started writing for the next upcoming event: performing with an orchestra of 40
people, ranging from 10 year to 50. I also dedicated a page on this event: Mis 2001.
Besides this there is some news from the Jazz front: Demeter will be performing at
"De Boekenkast" in Capelle at the 13th of April. We will also play at the
opening of an exhibition of Tjarko in Den Haag and probably at the artist club "Arti
Et Amicitiae" in Amsterdam in April. |
16 january 2001
| We did a marvelous job at The Hofzittingen. It was the last time we were performing and
especially the last evening was great. Now we continue with writing for an event at a
church at "Carnaval". I will also dedicate a page to this event. |
5 january 2001
| probably the last contribution to the Hofzittingen
2001 section: "Non Non Rien N'a Change" |
2 january 2001
2 january 2001
30 december 2000
| one track added for the Hofzittingen 2001 |
| the performance with the Latin Project of the RJP was OK: the mood was right and there
was a lot of audience. Probably this was the last concert, we go on with a Zappa Project
by Corrie Van Binsbergen. |
27 december 2000
| three tracks added for the Hofzittingen 2001 |
| The Rotterdam Jazz Project will be performing their Afro-Cuban program at The Doelencafe

Jurtschenko.

"Swing, Jump and Jive" program. |

| two arrangements can be found on the Scorchmusic
site: "La Chanson des Vieux Amants" (jazz) and "I Work In The
Mine " (musical). |
3 december 2000
| My apologies for the lack of new content on this web. I have been busy playing and
recording. For the latter: with the Tuesday Big Band I have been working on a demo CD. On
it is my arrangement of "Love For Sale". Besides this I recorded with The
Hazenoten for the "Loeiersfestijn" CD. On it will be about ten vocal tracks
accompanied by the orchestra. |
| At the moment I'm busy writing for the Hofzitting 2001. It will be a show with songs,
dance and humouristic performances. I dedicated a new page on this item:
Hofzittingen 2001. |
| Unfortunately I am out of the Scorch-competition. But I have to admit: the winner did a
great job !! |
30 october 2000
| The Faas gig went great ! There was a lot of audience and some live footage has been
shot. It comprises audio as well as video. At the moment I'm compiling the material and it
will be presented on this web soon. |
| I have submitted the score of "La
Chanson Des Vieux Amants" for approval on the Scorchmusic site. It has been accepted !! It's also
entrance for an arranging competition, which will be judged by Michael Kamen, known of his
work for Pink Floyd, Metallica etc. Also member of the jury is Andy Summers, former member
of the Police. |
22 october 2000
| Added MIDI of "Oye Como Va" on Various Songlist.I
